The Five of Swords can be interpreted as either retreat or as conquest. As a conquest card, this card represents winning a battle against the odds. It is about persevering even if you are out-numbered. At the same time, if your opponents are obviously less skilled then you, then victory can be hollow. This is especially true if you are concerned only with yourself and not welfare of others.

If the card is being interpreted as representing retreat, then the card is all about accepting your limitations. Sometimes when there is conflict and hostility, it is wise not to get involved. If you have no chance of winning a head on conflict, then the wise person will do their best to avoid the head-on approach and instead find a different way to achieve victory. As is common with the sword cards, this means that logic and rational thinking need to come ahead of your emotions, especially if that emotion is pride.
