Captured by Aliens

The universe that this game takes place in is different from how I personally believe the universe is in the fact that intelligent aliens are common. My personal views on this subject is that there is probably only a few intelligent species in a galaxy. I suspect that simple life forms, such as bacteria, are very common, but as you scale the complexity of the life, the probability of a stable enough environment to encourage and sustain that life becomes far less common. It would not surprise me if humans were the only intelligent life currently in the galaxy. By intelligent, I am referring to lifeforms capable of creating advanced technology such as computers.

While it is certainly possible to have a science fiction universe that does not include intelligent aliens, with Dune and the Foundation series being an excellent examples, it is simply more fun to have space filled with advanced alien species.

One of the themes I was aiming for when I originally envisioned One of those Weeks was the “out of the frying pan into the fire” type of solutions to problems. What better fire could there be after escaping a hostile alien then to end up captured by another alien species. Of course, the player does not know at this point that the Medusians are only hostile in the bureaucratic sense.

To me, the obvious puzzle for this game had to be one of physics. It is, to me at least, fun to play around with of movement in a near-zero friction environment. On Earth, we have all these forces acting to stop our motion that we rarely have the chance to play around with motion vectors. The laws of physics that make up this game are covered in a later section, but the basic key to winning this game is simply to remember that new bursts of thrust simply adjust the direction you are heading in. To stop, you must thrust in the opposite direction in which you are heading. Too much speed is extremely dangerous as it is hard to make hard turns.
