Episode 18: Modern Roulette

Introduction

Roulette is one of the most elegant casino games. It appeared in European casino's during the eighteenth century. The game involves a spinning wheel with coloured numbers around it. The wheel is spun and a ball is rolled around the spinning wheel in the opposite direction of the spin. Where the ball lands determines the winning number.

Playing the Game

Players play the game by making bets on which number will come up. Bets can be for a single number or for multiple numbers.

Bets on the numbers are known as inside bets, while the outer bets on large chunks of the table are known as outside bets. You make your bet by using the menu system to find the type of bet you want. Every bet has an id number assigned to it, so if you know the bet id, you can bypass the menus.

There are six main inside bets.

• Single Number or Straight line bets are bets on a single number. These are made by placing the bet on the number.
• Two number splits are bets on two adjoining numbers. These are made by placing the bet between two numbers.
• Three number or line bets are bets on a line of three numbers. These are made by placing the bet on the line between the column of numbers and the outside bets.
• Corner bets are bets on a square of four adjoining numbers. Simply made by placing the bet in the cross section of the four numbers.
• First five bet is a special bet on 00, 0, 1, 2, and 3.
• Six Line bets are a combination of two line bets. This is made by placing the chip between the two lines.

There are four types of outside bets.

• Twelve number bets are groups of 12 numbers.
• Half table bets (high or low) are for half of the numbers.
• Odd or Even bets are on if the resulting number will be odd or even.
• Black or Red are bets on the colour of the number that comes up.

System Requirements

This game is requires Java 1.1 or better to run. Browsers that support 1.1 tend to be 4.x or better versions. Windows XP users may have to download a Java plug in to use Java applets.
