Episode 22: Modern Baccarat

Introduction

If you are a fan of James Bond, then you must have notice that he has one favoured casino game. That game is Chemin De Fer. The American/Canadian equivalent to this game is Baccarat. While Baccarat is seen as a game for the rich, it is a very simple game, and one which offers some of the best odds at a casino (though in the long run, you will lose money playing this game, so if you want to play this game then do so on my site where it will never cost you anything)!

Playing the Game

You then go through the betting loop. You simply have to decide if the player is going to win, the dealer is going to win, or if the game is going to end in a tie. Betting on the dealer will win slightly more frequently than betting on the player.

The dealer then deals 2 hands. Face cards count as 0. The hands are then totalled, and the last digit of the hand taken as the score. If one or both of the hands is an 8 or a 9 the game ends. If the player's hand is five or less, the player is dealt another card.

The rules for dealing the dealer's card can seem confusing. With some versions of the game, the dealer would not see the player's hand, but only see the third card (if one was taken). The decision to take another card then is essentially a mathematically derived series of rules that would result in the best chance for a win.

The rules are as follows:

• Player doesn't draw then draw if hand less than five
• Player draws a 0, 1, or 9 then draw if hand less than 4
• Player draws a 2 or 3 then draw if hand less than 5
• Player draws a 4 or 5 then draw if hand less than 6
• Player draws a 6 or 7 then draw if hand less than 7
• Player draws an 8 then draw only if hand less than 3

The hand closest to 9 is the winner. If both hands are the same, the game ends in a tie.

System Requirements

This game is requires Java 1.1 or better to run. Browsers that support 1.1 tend to be 4.x or better versions. Windows XP users may have to download a Java plug in to use Java applets.
