September 1, 2006 - Man I have a lot of code

Looking over all the stuff that I am going to be moving to various code repositories over the next few months (and release one or two new things for the visitors who don't care about open source). In the long run, I think the benefits of going open source will be worth it. Even if nobody contributes assets or code to my projects, what I am doing will be out in the open so visitors will have better control over the direction my games take meaning that the games will be better. I am updating every day on the coming soon page, so if you want a say in what gets open sourced, go there and vote! As for the last week, here is what has been opened up:

September 2nd to 8th, 2006

Classic Maze

My effort to open source everything is continuing, though I am finding that with the exception of Google, the repositories take forever to let you know if they are going to accept your project or not (though so far, the sites who have responded have all allowed my submission). Ultimate Retro Project has all the source for the completed games in the series up. In fact, I even added a finished game that was not released on this site (actually it wasn’t finished until earlier in the day but it is finished now). So I present to you Classic Maze, the first installment of the fifth volume of the ultimate retro project. For those of you who don’t care about open source (the majority of my visitors I imagine) I am going to be trying to get at least one new game, update, or level out every week. One final note, you may want to check out the coming soon page as I am voting for which collection of games to open source next.

OotW episode 20Septamber 9th to 16th, 2006

My open source effort continues, with a lot of code ready for posting, but delays in the repositories I have been applying to accepting the projects. My smaller games will be hosted on the site (no subversion, just zipped code which is not a very efficient way of developing, but the smaller projects are unlikely to have much development anyway so unless I get patches emailed to me, they will stay in zip files). For the majority of my visitors (who probably won't see the benefits of my open source strategy for a while) I have posted the 20th episode of One of those Weeks. It is not open source, though the first seven episodes are.

Classic Circle WordSeptember 17 to 23rd, 2006

Over the weekend I got a log of work done on my various open source efforts. Monday Tower of Hanoi won the vote. The rest of the week seemed to be focused on Coffee Quest, with the Coffee Quest Five Six engine being started and Coffee Quest 3 being open sourced. As for a game to release this week, I spent a bit of my own time finishing off Ultimate Retro Project episode 45: Classic Circle Word.

Making Coffee Quest Chapter 3September 24th to 30th, 2006

It has been quite a while since I have released an article and even longer since I have released a chapter from my Making of Coffee Quest eBook, so today's release is going to be Chapter 3 of Making of Coffee Quest. In this chapter we take a look at the techniques that the first Coffee Quest game uses for drawing the display. Daily polling on the Coming Soon page has actually been split between the CQFS engine and Modern Word Scramble. A few other choices have had some votes, but not enough to beat out the two popular choices (though votes are retained until a task wins so eventually the tasks will end up winning). For those readers who don't know what I am talking about, go to the coming soon page.
