Winter Circle WordNovember 26th to December 2nd

I think that people are probably getting a bit tired of One of those Weeks releases so I am going to do something different for this week. As Christmas is approaching, I figure that I might as well get my Christmas content out of the way (as two of the games being voted for on the Coming Soon page are almost ready and may be finished right during the time I originally planned to release this). This week's release is the winter edition of the Circle Word game. As a bonus, I am taking advantage of the word lists and also releasing a winter edition of Word Scramble. For those of you who do not celebrate Christmas, there are two alternative word lists included.

Santas SearchDecember 3rd to 9th 2006

The other planned Christmas release is the open source version of Santa's Search. In this game you search for Santa's missing reindeer. I was going to write an article about how the game works, but realized that the material for creating the game is essentially the same as that in my Making of One of those Weeks eBook (chapter 6). Last week I forgot to post the results of the poll. 45% loved downloads, another 45% were willing to download games, and slightly less than 10% hated downloads (my numbers were rounded to make them nice),.

Coffee Quest GLDecember 10th to 16th 2006

Today's release is a very important release. It is my first attempt at creating a game that takes advantage of 3D hardware acceleration (using the JOGL extension). This game does require a fairly new version of Java (J2SE 1.4 or better) and requires that you have an Open GL compatible driver. Because the game is using the hardware directly, driver issues also become more of a potential problem. In order to help me decide if I should create more Java games that use JOGL, I need to know how well the game worked on your computers (it ran fine on the 3 systems I tested it on). Even if you aren't interested in Coffee Quest, if you want to see more 3D games, try out Coffee Quest GL and let me know your results by contacting me through the contact page.

OotW Episode 22December 17th to 23th, 2006

I was actually going to wait until next week to release this game (as should be obvious by the ending statement) but figured as a lot of people were not able to play Coffee Quest GL (far more than I anticipated) that I should probably release the game this week. Of course, this week's game is the 22 installment of the One of those Weeks series. I am also going to keep the Coffee Quest GL poll open so if you never tried the game last week, you can help increase my data that will help determine next year's direction in regards to 3D games.

Sliding into 2007December 24th to 30th, 2006

Although technically the new year does not start until next week's update, as I post my games on Friday morning GMT (Thursday evening PST), this update will be the last time I post content to the site in 2006. As I posted the game I had planned to post last week, this week I have decided to do something for new years and create a picture for the stand alone version of my java Sliding Puzzle game which I am calling Slide into 2007. While it may not be considered professional artwork, I think it makes for an appropriate final release of the year and is certainly better than an article.
