History of One of those Weeks

One of those Weeks actually began life as an outline for a book. Not this book, but a fictional book. The outline sat on my hard drive for a while with no actual work being done on it. That, of course, is the fate of most of my ideas as I really don’t have the time or resources to comes into my mind. Even if I was able to devote full time to working on the myriad of things I would like to do I doubt I would ever come close to finishing them all. When I come up with an idea, it gets played around with in my head for a while. The more promising ideas (the ones that actually have some chance of being completed) then end up as written documents or proposals. A few of those plans actually do see the light of day, though not always as originally envisioned.

Many have you have probably read about how Dragon and the Sword came to be but I will repeat it here for the sake of completeness. As a lot of my income comes from third party work, when someone who was actually in the position to hire me asked me what I thought about Flash my response was that it was good enough for simple games and probably could be used to put together adventure games. He sounded interested so I quickly put together the Dragon and the Sword game. While the demo did not lead to a lucrative contract (I suspect his definition of adventure games were console “adventure” games not traditional computer adventure games) it did result in a game that later appeared on my site.

When I did finally decide to post the game to what was then my site (Blazing Games Inc. now owns the site, but at the time I write this, the majority of the Blazing Games Inc. shares are owned by me so I suppose technically the site still is mine), I started thinking about actually doing a series of adventure games. I have a fair number of ideas for adventure games, but they all tend to be large and would not work well if broken into small episodes. One thing I was considering was releasing the game by slowly adding more accessible areas as they are finished. Would people like such a format, or would they get pissed off at being told an area was not released yet? Not too sure about the answer to that question, I decided a more episode based game was needed. That is when I remembered the book outline I wrote.

The game was born, but was still not part of the Blazing Games Guide to Flash Game Development book. In fact, my original plans for the book had two variations of Dragon and the Sword. I didn’t feel this was fair, so even though multiple episodes of One of those Weeks had been released, I decided that the first episode could stand on its own and modified the book to include the first episode as part of it. In fact, because the first episode was simpler, in the book it appears before Dragon and the Sword.

Now what started out as a plan for a fictional book is being turned into a non-fiction book. It always amazes me how twisted things end up.
