The basics of Coffee Quest

While the goal of the Coffee Quest series was to develop a role-playing game, the first game in the series is a thee dimensional maze game with a fairly simple inventory system. You move through the game world by clicking on the on-screen compass or by using the cursor keys (you can also use the i key for forward, the j key for turning left, the k key for turning right). The goal is to collect all the components needed for making a cup of coffee and bringing them to a power outlet.

Originally there was only a single maze, but when I updated the site for my Blazing Games domain, I created two additional maps (ice and under ground). Also there was a test map released with the Open Source version of Coffee Quest and an additional large map released with the construction set.

The reason that the game was called Coffee Quest was because the game was being developed in Java, which is a slang term for Coffee. The goal of the game came as a result of the name chosen for the game. The ironic thing is that as of May 26th, 2006 I have been considering changing the language that the fifth and sixth installments of the series will be written in. This has nothing to do with the shortcomings of the Java language (which I really like), but instead has to do with Sun's lackluster support of the applet portion of the language. A lot of people simply do not like Java applets, though seem to have no problem with Flash. Both of these applet languages lack 3D support, however Flash does allow for saving a decent amount of information on the client. I know that stand alone Java applications have no limitations with saving information or with 3D. The problem is I want games on my site, not downloadable games. That being said, by the time we reach part five of this book, a decision will have been made.
